Google SpamBrain. AI-based detection layer powering link-spam discounting and parasite-SEO enforcement.

SpamBrain is Google's AI spam detection system. It surfaces anchor-text monoculture, link-velocity anomalies, expired-domain repurposing, and site-reputation abuse. Detection feeds both algorithmic discounting (the spam is zero-weighted at URL level continuously) and manual-action routing. Recent named enforcement: May 5, 2024 site-reputation-abuse start and the September 2024 expired-domain-abuse enforcement.

What SpamBrain detects

SpamBrain is the AI-based spam detection layer Google uses to identify manipulative patterns at scale across the web. The system extends the Penguin lineage into the modern surface and covers categories Penguin did not originally name. The signature patterns the system surfaces include anchor-text monoculture (the same exact-match anchor on a disproportionate share of inbound links to a site), link-velocity anomalies (sudden spikes inconsistent with the site's historical link-acquisition cadence), private blog network footprints (shared hosting, shared registrant, templated content patterns, cross-linking patterns), expired-domain repurposing (registration-data signal of ownership change combined with topical-focus shift away from the historical content), and site-reputation abuse (third-party commercial content published on a highly authoritative domain without close oversight).

The detection runs continuously. The system does not wait for a named refresh window; signals update as the crawl and the link graph evolve. The output feeds two distinct surfaces: algorithmic discounting at URL level (the manipulative link is zero-weighted in real time), and manual-action routing (the spam-review team reads the flagged surface for a manual penalty).

The signature patterns operators see

Anchor-text monoculture. A healthy inbound link profile mixes exact-match anchors, partial-match anchors, branded anchors, and generic anchors. When the inbound profile reads as 70%+ exact-match on a single commercial query, the pattern reads as engineered. The Penguin-era detection of this pattern produced sitewide demotions pre-2016; the post-Penguin-4.0 era zero-weights the affected URLs continuously without sitewide impact, but the ranking signal the operator was trying to acquire never arrives.

Link-velocity anomalies. Sudden spikes in inbound link volume that read as inconsistent with the site's historical acquisition cadence trigger the velocity-anomaly flag. Algorithmic discounting follows immediately; manual review can follow if the pattern is severe enough.

Expired-domain repurposing. The algorithm stores domain registration data at the composite document level. When ownership changes and the topical focus shifts (e.g., an expired medical domain repurposed as a casino affiliate site), historical link signals are reset. The pattern is largely neutralized algorithmically; the named September 2024 enforcement window added manual actions for active cases. The remediation surface is expired domain abuse recovery.

How the diagnostic reads SpamBrain demotions

Two distinct demotion shapes show up in the traffic data. The first is a manual action: the Search Console Manual Actions report flags a category line (unnatural-links-to-site, site-reputation-abuse, expired-domain-abuse) and the remediation is per-category with a reconsideration request. The second is algorithmic discounting: the Manual Actions report stays empty, but the ranking signal the inbound links were carrying never arrives or fades as SpamBrain re-evaluates the link graph. For algorithmic cases, the recovery is acquisition-source remediation, not disavow. Penguin 4.0 zero-weights the manipulative links continuously; submitting them in a disavow file is largely redundant. For manual-action cases, the remediation runs per-category and the reconsideration request authors against the named category line.     Expired-domain abuse. The pattern is purchasing domains with historical authority and repurposing them to host low-quality unrelated content. The algorithm stores domain registration data at the composite document level and resets historical link signals when ownership changes and the topical focus shifts.     Can SpamBrain demote a site without a manual action firing?

    Yes. The algorithmic discounting and the manual-action routing are separate surfaces. SpamBrain can zero-weight manipulative links at the URL level continuously without ever triggering a manual notification.
